The helipad
Getting there
Napoléon-Bonaparte Airport sits on the shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, a few kilometres from the city centre. It is the gateway to southern Corsica: the old town and the port are a quarter of an hour away by car, and the Sanguinaires coastal road runs on along the gulf to the west. From Nice, the flight takes about 1 h 15, entirely over water.
When to go
The airport is served year-round. Southern Corsica's season runs from April to October, with a sharp peak in July and August; June and September offer the same sea with far quieter beaches and easier slots.
FAQ
Frequently asked
How long is the helicopter flight from Nice to Ajaccio?
About 1 h 15 in the air, entirely over water. The same journey takes six to twelve hours by ferry from Nice or Toulon, and half a day by airline once check-in and transfers are counted.
Why is the route flown on a twin-engine helicopter?
Extended overwater flight is regulated: it requires a twin-engine aircraft and life jackets on board. The crossing is therefore operated on an Airbus H135 or Leonardo AW109, carrying up to five passengers.
Is a passport needed to fly from Nice to Corsica?
No: it is a French domestic flight. Valid photo ID is required at boarding, as on any domestic airline flight.
